Learning Whole Songs
My often painful struggle to learn, perform, and maybe even record, whole songs.
Can I play lead guitar on Motorcycle Emptiness by Manic Street Preachers?
This is my first cover of "Motorcycle Emptiness" by the Manic Street Preachers. Can I play the lead parts or should I stick to rhythm playing? I'll be the first to tell you that I have never seen myself as a lead guitarist - too many pauses and solos. Note: the vocals in this cover version are generated by an AI trained in my voice, although it doesn't sound much like me and pronounces 'motorcycle' in a really weird way. What do you think? Is this an ok start for a beginner? |
At the end of 2020 I was challenged to record a cover version of "Seven Nation Army" by the White Stripes. The challenger said that if I recorded it then they would record themselves singing over it. This kick-started my 2022 drive to not only re-learn the guitar, but improve on my 20's skills and finally conquer the instrument. This video is episode 2 of the journey and details my 'progress' as at the start of 2022 as I attempt to play along to the track. I don't take myself too seriously. Buy the second guitar (Harley Benton HB-35Plus ) here. |
This is my first attempt at playing along to "Welcome to the Dead Zone" by The Manic Street Preachers on my S-style guitar. This is a beginner recording his first attempt at playing along to a song, in the hope that I can look back in a few months (years?), and say "Have I improved?" This is really just recorded early rehearsals. Will I be any good? Will I be able to play it all? What will we both learn together? This is a funny, and light-hearted first attempt. How bad can it be? What do you think of my attempt? |

This is my first attempt at playing "Song 2" by Blur. This isn't me saying "Look at me! Look how brilliant I am!" This is a beginner recording his first attempt at playing a song, in the hope that I can look back in a few months (years?), and say "this is me playing it now. Have I improved?" This is really just recorded early rehearsals. Will I be any good? Will I be able to play it all? What will we both learn together? This is a funny, and light-hearted first attempt. How bad can it be? What do you think of my attempt? Let me know in the comments. |
At the end of 2021 I was challenged to record a cover version of "Seven Nation Army" by the White Stripes. The challenger said that if I recorded it then they would record themselves singing over it. This video is my idea to maybe record an acoustic version of the song. What do you think of the idea? Please join me on my first journey into recording music since four track tape machines in the 80's! There's a lot for me to get my head around. |

Beginner tries, and hilariously fails to play along with Seven Nation Army by the White Stripes, proving that it's far harder than it looks! Guitars Are Hard! |
(Note: Long, full version. Episode 1 is the edited version.) In 2021 I was challenged to record a cover version of "Seven Nation Army" by the White Stripes. This is a video of my 'progress' as at the start of 2022. This video really is nothing more than me choosing effects, guitar and showing how much more practice I need. I'm returning to playing guitar after a 20+ year absence, so I'm no virtuoso. (My fingers & brain don't work like they did in my teens / twenties!) This is just noodling from someone who is in essence a beginner. Thank you for watching. |
